| 8:20 Balancing the Technical and Human Factors in Driving Organizational Improvement |
 |
Lean Six Sigma presumes standardization and control of processes and their inputs. From a technical perspective, the "vital x's" within organizations are relatively easy to improve and control; however, for many of us Improve and Control involve the management of human behaviors. The human element has the power to make or break improvements, no matter how elegant the technical solutions. The management of human factors presents a unique and complex challenge.
• Examining the controls for the human element in business processes and services
• What we can learn from the domains of organizational effectiveness and human resource development to manage human behavior and limit variation

| 9:50 Innovating Lean Six Sigma itself: How to apply Artificial Intelligence in Lean Six Sigma |
 |
How do we achieve monumental breakthrough in the way Lean Six Sigma are applied to business today? How do we make it easier, faster, and more effective? Consider that 1 in 10 Lean Six Sigma projects require the use of sophisticated statistical tools, however, 40% or more classroom time is dedicated to teaching such tools. Now imagine a technology that eliminates the need for much of that statistical analysis. Sound too good to be true? It's not.
Artificial Intelligence applications have finally been brought down to the desktop level in such a user-friendly manner that with a few hours of education, anyone can use it. Technology today has the ability to produce a more capable Black Belt using less training time.
In this session, David Silverstein, President and CEO of Breakthrough Management Group, will provide a basic understanding of Artificial Intelligence using genetic algorithms along with extraordinary case studies that demonstrate the future of Lean and Six Sigma.

 |
Experience shows that most industrial quality problems are created by 4 or 5 causes. This presentation shows how to quickly sort through a large number of possible causes of your product and/or process quality problems in order to reduce the number of causes to this manageable set of 4 or 5. Three industrial cases show how the seven tools of quality and other six sigma techniques are used to reduce the number of possible causal variables. One case is from a Transmission Manufacturer, another from an Automobile Engine Plant and the third is from an Electronics Manufacturing Company.

| 11:50 MANUFACTURING STREAM A: Applying Simple Lean Tools in Non-Manufacturing Functions |
 |
What do you do in this situation? Your production manager says, “The process for getting temp hires in the door is too slow and complex. I need faster response from HR and Purchasing to support the fluctuating product demand!” Worse yet, how do you respond to this customer scenario? A valued customer says, “Your company is hard to do business with. It is very difficult to identify which products I need. When I finally determine the right product mix, it takes a long time to get a price and delivery quote from you!” These are not uncommon scenarios in companies today. Whether you manufacture goods, deliver services, or process transactions, you have office processes that must “produce” output to meet your business needs, and those of your customer. With reference to practical examples in HR processes and Sales, this session will focus on specific, simple Lean tools, well proven in manufacturing, that can help your office processes:

• Value Stream Map
• Takt Time / Cycle Time
• Time/Value Chart

 |
The U.S. Navy is transforming to become more efficient and effective in delivering current and future readiness to win the Global Terrorism on Terrorism (GWOT) both now and into the future. The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and affiliated Program Executive Offices (PEOs) are an integral part of this transformation as they are responsible for equipping the Fleet with the ships and associated weapons systems necessary to accomplish the Navy’s mission. To deliver this material readiness in the most reliable and economic manner, NAVSEA and the PEOs have launched a major implementation of Lean Six-Sigma across the entire Enterprise – about 50,000 government personnel in 30 geographically dispersed organizations and a large base of industry partners. This initiative is called Task Force Lean (TFL) and has been underway for a little over a year. Mr. Jim Brice, the Director, will share experiences, results, and lessons learned from the aggressive Command-wide rollout.

Lean Six Sigma Measurement Systems – How to Get the Most Out of Your Existing Data Infrastructure
Your organization has already spent millions on software and databases to operate your business. Those systems should be full of data that we can use to drive Lean Six Sigma projects. But all too often these systems aren’t Lean or Six Sigma savvy; typically they are full of useless or erroneous data. Just when you expect to get the data you need, you learn that you are actually ‘data poor’.
This workshop is a hands-on exploration of what you can do about it. We’ll look at the critical-to-success factors in establishing a measurement system to support Lean Six Sigma. We’ll compare some of the popular tools that you can use to assemble and scrub data. If you’ve ever found your Lean Six Sigma efforts mired because of insufficient data, or too much of the wrong type of data, this workshop is for you.
What you can expect to learn:
• Why many Lean Six Sigma projects fail and deployments stall
• Special considerations to the Lean and Six Sigma Methodologies regarding data – especially for transactional/service projects
• The importance of operational definitions
• Building information systems that support Lean Six Sigma initiatives
• Reducing the costs of capturing the right type and volume of data needed
• Extracting data from existing information systems for Lean Six Sigma projects
• Tying information systems into statistical analysis software like MINITAB and other enterprise reporting systems
About Your Workshop Leader: Evan Miller, President and CEO, Hertzler Systems Inc. Evan was first involved in Six Sigma with Motorola and its supply base in the late 1980s. Under his guidance Hertzler Systems has become the leader in building data infrastructures for Six Sigma, particularly in the difficult areas of service and transaction applications. As a leader in the industry, Mr. Miller has delivered seminars and presentations to industry organizations such as ASQ, ISSSP and Society of Plastics Engineers, just to name a few.
